‘Construction workers play key role in development’

Construction workers play a key role in the development drive of the country. The government has allocated a large amount of money for the construction sector, said Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister Wimal Weerawansa.

Minister Weerawansa

He was addressing the National Construction Awards Ceremony at Waters Edge, Battaramulla recently.

More than 17.3 percent of the national economy is covered by the construction field. It is necessary to encourage employees in the construction sector, the minister said.

“Low quality raw materials affected the construction sector.

They are freely moving in the local market. It has become a challenge for builders to find quality raw materials. The ministry will take action to solve this problem,” he said.

He said there is huge competition among international construction companies to invest in Sri Lanka.

Local builders should grasp new technologies as they have to compete in the international market. “The country should produce more new trained labour through the Institute for Construction Training and Development and the Youth Affairs Ministry,” the minister said.
