The prestige of a school lies in its students. Recently, Musaeus College, a foremost Buddhist Girls’ school of the country, gifted her daughters with a new facilities building, in view of developing a suitable environment for creating all-rounders.

Marie Musaeus Higgings

120 glorious years after its founding, Musaeus College will prove herself worthy of her name and fame when the facilities building will be ceremoniously handed over to the daughters of Mother Musaeus by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa in a colourful ceremony scheduled for today.

Musaeus College was founded by a benevolent German Lady,Marie Musaeus Higgins who arrived in Sri Lanka to take forward the onerous task of educating the ‘girl child’ of the nation. It was in a little mud hut that the school was first started with twelve students.

Great philanthropists of the day unfailingly supported Higgins in her great cause. Peter de Abrew not only donated half an acre of his own property at Rosmead Place, but actively participated in the administration of the school, nurturing it as a tender plant. On this half acre of land, the first brick building appeared with the kind sponsorship of Wilton Hack. From these humble beginnings, the school grew into strength day by day, and stands proudly today.

Marie Musaeus Higgins, laid a solid foundation for a truly Buddhist education. Fondly known as ‘Sudu Amma’, her aspirations for her daughters were very high. Under her caring guidance, students learnt to value the Sinhala Buddhist culture and grew up with a deep sense of inner discipline.

Her strong upright personality has motivated the young individuals of many a generation. Along the path Sudu Amma paved, Musaeites traverse following the light of wisdom, true to the school motto 'Padeepan Gavesatha'.

Throughout the past decades, the high ideals set by Higgins were kept alive by the students, teachers, succeeding Principals and trustees alike. Musaeus College at all times strives to instill into the minds of the students the importance of a balanced personality. It is engaged in the challenging task of imparting a value education to all its students by providing all opportunities and facilities, encouraging them to develop their inborn talents and skills.

Musaeus College has maintained high standards of discipline, Sinhala Buddhist value system, guiding its student population to become useful citizens of the society. Achievements have been many in the fields of education, sports and other extra-curricular activities.

The Legacy of Marie Musaeus Higgins lives on in the name of Musaeus College. The mature wisdom of our founders has always blended well with the youthful energy of the present day administrators of the school.

On this special anniversary, ‘Mother Musaeus’ is gifted with a magnificent facilities building which comprises of the ‘Best School Auditorium of South Asia’ among other numerous modern facilities. Buildings stand tall sheltering around 6000 young girls, the good name of Musaeus College stands even taller, ever shining.
