Agashan and Sinthuja take singles titles

M. Agashan of Central College, Jaffna and S. Sinthuja of Union College, Jaffna won the most outstanding players awards and emerged men’s and women’s singles champions respectively in the Jaffna District Table Tennis Championship which was worked off at the Jaffna Central College recently.

Meanwhile in the Vavuniya District Table Tennis Championship which was conducted at the same venue, A. Stanley of the Sundarapuram Government Tamil Mixed School clinched the men’s open singles title along with the most outstanding player (men’s) award. His school mate S. Thushanthani who became the women’s most outstanding player bagged a double crown by winning under-17 and under-15 titles. The under-19 and Open women’s events have been withdrawn from the Vavuniya District tournament due to lack of entries.

Nilaveli Peace Village in collaboration with the Asian German Sports Exchange Programme and the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka (TTASL) conducted the championships. The main sponsor of the event, Abans Ltd. Jaffna ‘A’ Show Room manageress Yarlini Vethanayagam was the chief guest at the award ceremony and distributed the awards.

TTASL Vice President, Chandana Perera specially thanked Abans Senior Director and former national TT player Pesi Pestonjee for their continues support to popularize the sport in North and East. He also pointed out that four players from Akkaraipattu Muslim Central College came all the way over 400 kms, traveling two days to participate in the tournament. ‘They were very enthusiastic and it is a good omen for the spreading of this sport in the Eastern part of the country’, said the TTASL Secretary.
