Double tragedy in Puttalam

A police constable attached to Puttalam police shot himself after shooting his girl friend dead yesterday, Police said.

The constable died of the injuries he sustained. The incident had taken place following a brawl the constable had with his girl friend.

The victims are Mahesh Heenkanda, a resident of Kahatagasdigiliya in Anuradhapura and Ganga Sanjeewani Dissanayake, a resident of Kiula Yaya 7 in Madurankuliya.

The Police said the constable had visited his girlfriend’s house last night. She had insisted that she wanted to continue studies.

The constable had shot her and then shot himself. Both succumbed to gun shot injuries while being taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, Aluthgama Police said yesterday that two persons died following an accident involving a train and a lorry at a railway crossing in Aluthgama. Aluthgama police are investigating.
