A large scale compost plant complex has been constructed in Hikkaduwa
to control the garbage problem and maintain a pleasant environment in
the city which is a key attraction of tourists, a spokesperson of the
Central Environmental Authority (CEA) told the Daily News yesterday.
He said the complex has been constructed at Rs 83 million in
Monroviawatta in Hikkaduwa under the Pilisaru Solid Waste Management
National Project of the CEA. Garbage collected from the Galle Municipal
Council, Hikkaduwa Urban Council and Ambalangoda, Rajgama, Bope Poddala
and Balapitiya Pradeshiya Sabhas would be transported and recycled in
this plant.
This project would help to provide a sustainable solution to the
garbage problem in the Southern Province making it cleaner, pleasant and
more conducive for the developing tourism industry. Similar large scale
composting plants are in operation in Medirigiriya, Anuradhapura,
Kolonnawa and Kalutara.
CEA Chairman Charitha Herath recently went on an inspection tour of
the composting plant complex which has just completed construction to
check whether it is built to required standards.
The project technical officers, Chairmen and officers of relevant
Pradeshiya Sabhas and officers of the construction company also
