Kyle de Silva carded a two under par round of 69 gross to maintain
his lead by ten shots over Sachin de Silva who carded 79 gross in the
Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship’s second day’s play at the
spectacular Royal Colombo Golf Course yesterday.
Both players contested closely from the beginning where Kyle took the
lead on the first day, scoring 74 gross, closely followed by Sachin in
the second place with a gross score of 75 in the overall championship.
Development squad player Chanaka Perera improved on day two after his
disappointing score of 83 on the first day to score 81 gross. Kyle,
Sachin and Chanaka are also contending for top honours in the age group
15 -17 years – Gold division.
The Bronze division age group category 10 years and under concluded
with Vinod Weerasinghe of British School clinching the title with an
aggregate score of 90 over two days play of 9 holes each. Arvind
Hirdaramani of Colombo International School totaled an aggregate score
of 99 to be runner up.
Yohan Rukmal scored 105 gross to become the second runner up, while
Ishira Umayanga with 106 and Vinuk Welikela with 136 gross won the third
and fourth runner up positions respectively.
In the Silver division age group 11–14 years, Prashan Peiris of S.
Thomas’ Prep School continued his top class performance with a second
day score of 84 gross. Closely followed by consistent Zaffar Sikkandar
of British School with a gross score of 83.
Much improvement was shown by Isihara Fernando on day two with a
gross score of 85 to take third place after round two of the Sri Lanka
Junior open. Charya Kannangara posted 98 and Pravreeraj of Victoria Golf
Club with 97 gross were the other promising players in the category. The
outstation players from Kandy and Nuwara Eliya failed to impress at the
National Championship this year under tough conditions with rains making
the course challenging for most players.
This year too, the Championship is being sponsored by Ceylon Agro
Industries – Prima Group saw a high standard of golf and likely to see
an exciting last day’s play at the Royal Colombo Golf Club today. |
