The Norochcholai thermal power plant currently generates 300 MW of
electricity to the National Grid, according to an answer tabled by Chief
Government Whip and Minister Dinesh Gunawardene in Parliament yesterday.
The Thermal Power Plant was opened on March 22 this year.
Since then, the power plant had been operating as a base load plant,
providing much needed electricity demand especially during the drought
season in the months of August, September and October.
The plant had to shut down on a few occasions due to technical
failures, which were promptly, attended to by contractor and CEB staff,
the tabled answer said.
According to the tabled answer, the power plant had been closed down
for 35 days due to scheduled and unscheduled maintenance work and coal
supply delays.
