'Over 11,000 hit by floods'

About 11,631 persons belonging to 2,724 families in Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa and Killinochchi districts are affected by floods, a Disaster Management Centre Official said.

About 2,052 persons belonging to 509 families are presently in temporary shelters, he said.

He also said that no deaths or injuries were reported. Around 24 persons from five families have been affected in the Thambalagamuwa DS Division in the Killinochchi District and the situation has returned to normal. Around 63 persons belong to 15 families in Medirigiriya DS Division in Polonnaruwa were also affected. Sluice gates of Minneriya, Parakrama Samudraya, Kaudulla, Girithale and Pimburaththawa tanks are open.

About 11,544 persons belong to 20,704 families in Kandawalei and Karachchi DS divisions in Kilinochchi District were affected by the floods and 1,989 families are in temporary shelters, he said.
