The cardiology unit of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle will
be in a position to resume heart operations from December 24, hospital
Director Dr Jayampathy Senanayake said in a report submitted to Health
Minister Maithripala Sirisena through Health Services Director General
Dr Ajith Mendis yesterday.
Health Minister Sirisena who looked into the situation at the
Cardiology unit which had stopped heart operations earlier directed the
Director of Health Services on Monday to look into the matter and submit
a report to him.
The Director of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in his report
submitted yesterday said the operating theatres were closed on the
instructions of a specialist microbiologist since they had been
contaminated by germs due to entry of outside air through an opening.
Now the disinfection process has been completed and air conditioning has
been repaired and the operation theatres are back to normal from Monday
night the specialist microbiologist had reported.
Hospital Director further stated that it was not due to any fault of
the operating theatres that a patient named Nisal Thivanka died on
December 17.
The particular patient had died due to a lung ailment for which he
had undergone surgery twice before.
The patient died after being prepared for an operation for the third
time.
