First Lady donates house to War Hero’s widow

First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa donated a newly built house to the
widow of Naval Petty Officer K G Shantha who sacrificed his life in a
battle with the sea tigers during war at a simple ceremony held at
Udammita, Nittambuwa on December 16.
The house worth Rs 1.2 million was built by the Naval Engineering
Division under the War Hero’s Welfare Fund initiated by the First Lady.
Bill passed with 91 vote majority
Parliament reporters
The Committee Stage debate of the finance head of the Defence and
Urban Development Ministry on the Appropriation Bill was passed with a
majority of 91 votes in Parliament yesterday.
One hundred and four members voted with the government while 13
members voted against.
TNA and DNA members voted against.
The UNP members were not present in the House at the time of the
vote.
Carols
A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in English, Sinhala and Tamil
will be held at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Bauddhaloka
Mawatha, Colombo 7, on Sunday, December 18 at 6 pm. It is open to the
public.

Exhibition
An exhibition of rare photographs of Sri Lanka by Dr S H Perera will
be held from December 14 to 18.
The prize giving of the Moratuwa, Katubedde Janasetha-Kalaketha
Public Library was held on December 14, 2011.
Moratuwa Mayor W Samanlal Fernando presided.
This library was selected as the best library of the Colombo district
for the year 2010.
Public Day
The Ports and Highways Ministry has planned to conduct a Public Day
at the ministry premises on the 9th floor of the ‘Sethsiripaya’
Battaramulla every Wednesday to attend to the welfare activities of
police personnel in order to enable them perform their duties to the
public in an efficient manner.
This follows a decision taken by the President to entrust the Deputy
Minister of Ports and Highways Nirmala Kotelawala with the
responsibility of formulating a special welfare programme for the
benefit of the Police personnel to enable them perform their duties by
the public efficiently, said a press release issued by the ministry
yesterday.
Convocation
The convocation for the four year National Diploma in Engineering
Science awarded by the National Apprenticeship and Industrial Training
Authority's (NAITA) Katunayake Engineering Technology Institute will be
held at the BMICH today at 2.30pm with the participation of Youth
Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma.
About 346 students who entered the institute in 2006 for courses in
Civil, Electronic, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering will receive
certificates.
National Safety Day
National Safety Day will be held to commemorate victims of natural
disasters on December 26. A two minute silence will be observed
nationwide at 9.25am.
The main event to mark the day will take place in the Kaththankudi
town, Batticaloa.
Knocked down pedestrian dies

A pedestrian knocked down by a lorry at Merawala on the Chilaw-Colombo
road on Friday afternoon succumbed to his injuries at the Colombo
National hospital after being transferred from Chilaw hospital on
Sunday.
Army personnel injured in mishap

Four army personnel were injured and admitted to the Anuradhapura
Teaching and Mihintale Hospitals when the military police cab they were
travelling along Mihintale-Pothana road ran off the road and toppled
near the Mahakanadarawa wewa yesterday morning. |
