At least 55 Occupy SF protesters arrested
US: The police have arrested 55 Occupy movement protesters for
illegally camping outside the Federal Reserve building in the city of
San Francisco.
Officer Albie Esparza said the police had warned protesters every
hour for a 24-hour period before moving in on the encampment on Sunday
morning.
“It is difficult to believe the city’s assertions that these raids
are justified,” Occupy San Francisco wrote on its website, adding that
they believe members of the movement are victims of “blatant political
repression.
In recent days, in response to crackdowns across the country, Occupy
protesters have begun more forcefully expressing their stance that it is
their constitutional right to gather and discuss the country’s economic
issues without police interference.
On Wednesday, the San Francisco police arrested 85 Occupy protesters
in an encampment near the city’s Justin Herman Plaza.
The movement that was inspired by the Occupy Wall Street campaign
began on September 17 in New York City, with protesters saying they
intend to literally take over the country’s financial center until their
demands are met.
