About 835 road accidents have been taken place in the road stretch
from Deduru Oya up to Omaragolla on the Kurunegala-Dambulla main road
from January 2007 up to November 2011. There were 107 deaths and 206
became disabled in these accidents. The cost of damages caused to
vehicles in these accidents was nearly Rs 110 million.
These facts were revealed at a seminar held at Kumara Restaurant,
Melsiripura to make the public aware of the road rules. This seminar was
organized by the Gokarella Police and presided over by Senior Deputy
Inspector General of Police (NWP) Pujitha Jayasundara. The Senior DIG
said that the main reason for these accidents was the violation of road
rules.
“Careless driving, driving under the influence of liquor and fast
driving are the other reasons. The narrowness of the road is another
factor. The Police alone cannot minimize these road accidents. The
public should extend their fullest co-operation towards the Police in
this connection,” he added. |
