Five hundred irrigation tanks to be renovated

"The Agrarian Services and Wildlife Ministry plans to renovate around 500 irrigation tanks (Wevas) next year," said Agrarian Services Commissioner General Ravindra Hewavitharana.

"The government renovated over 250- tanks this year," he said. He said they expect more funds next year, from the Economic Development Ministry, to launch this development and renovation programme. This will help the country reach its development targets.

'The Agrarian Services and Wildlife Ministry allocated Rs. 180 million this year for renovation of small tanks," he said.

'The Economic Development Ministry, in addition, has granted Rs. 200 million to renovate 104 small reservoirs in the Anuradhapura district, in preparation for the 'Deyata Kirula' 2012 national development exhibition," he said.

Several small irrigation tanks were heavily damaged due to last year's floods in the North Central and Eastern Provinces.

The sixth Deyata Kirula National Development Exhibition is to be opened in the Oya Maduwa area in the Anuradhaprua district on February 04,2012, parallel to the Independence Day celebrations.
