MP’s XI clinch Speaker’s Trophy

Members of Parliament XI beat the Ministers XI by 71 runs to clinch
the Speaker’s Trophy in their annual cricket match played at Sports
Ministry grounds, Torrington Square yesterday.

The MP’s XI led by former Sri Lanka skipper Sanath Jayasuriya taking
first lease of the wicket piled up 176 for 8 wickets in their 20 overs.
Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya top scored with 36 while Akila Viraj
Kariyawasam (32) and Neranjan Wickremasinghe (27) made useful
contributions. Wimal Weerawansa who captured 3 wickets for 34 was the
most impressive of the Minister’s XI bowlers.
The Ministers’ XI scored 105 for 7 wickets in their 20 overs with
Indika Bandaranayake top scoring with 19 while Dullas Alahapperuma (11)
and Mahindananda Aluthgamage (12) made useful contributions. Harsha de
Silva (2 for 13) and Sanath Jayasuriya (2 for 14) were the main
wreckers. Dullas Alahapperuma of the Minister’s XI was adjudged man of
the match. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam of the MP’s XI was picked as the best
batsman while Harsha de Silva of the MP’s XI was the best bowler.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the chief guest.
