IIT recognised at international fora
Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) has been recognised in
international fora in countries spanning three continents, namely, the
Netherlands, India, China and USA.
The research work has been carried out as part of the final year
projects on the BEng. (Hons) Software Engineering Degree Programme
conducted by IIT in collaboration with University of Westminster, UK.
The research environment created at IIT has been able to facilitate
students to reach international recognition at several conference forums
of high repute.
IIT has opened a window of opportunity to increase the research
capacity of students in the areas of artificial intelligence, HCI
Robotics and several other related areas. This year’s acceptance of
final year research papers began with Sheran Corera, who represented Sri
Lanka at ‘Chi Sparks 2011’ held in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The title of
his research paper was “Capturing hand gesture movement: A survey on
tools, techniques and logical considerations”.
The theme of the conference was ‘HCI research, innovation and
implementation’ and was organized by Chi Nederland, the Dutch local
chapter of the ACM Special Interest Group on Human-Computer Interaction.
The paper which he presented at the conference was in relation to
research conducted on gesture based interaction with computers for
educational and recreational purposes.
The second conference was on Computer Vision and Robotics which is
one of the most challenging areas of the 21st century. The International
Conference on Computational Vision and Robotics (ICCVR- 2011),
Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India provided a forum for the presentation of new
research results and the demonstration of new systems and techniques in
the above mentioned area. The conference brought together developers,
users, academics and researchers in this area and the business community
for sharing and exploring new areas of research and development and also
to discuss emerging issues facing business organisations in the
knowledge economy. Dilushinie De Silva presented her research, “Review
on sign language recognition methods for supporting communication
between deaf and non-deaf”, along with her two other friends Thayine
Kugamoorthy and Gamitha Munasinghe presenting “Review on human computer
interaction methods for a virtual jewellery decider “and “GeoTips-An
enhanced mobile search application”, respectively. Here again they were
still undergraduates at the time of presenting the papers.
Achala Aponso and Sandun Perera are two other graduates of IIT whose
papers have been accepted for presentation and publication at the Second
International Conference of Soft Computing and Pattern Recognition (SoCPaR
2011) held at Dalian, China from October 14 to 16, 2011. Their papers
will be published in the conference proceedings of the IEEE.
Their projects respectively are a “Review on state of art image
enhancement and restoration methods for a vision based driver assistance
system with de-weathering” and “Smart-PIVO System- Personal Image and
Video Organizer with Person- Based Navigation”. SoCPaR 2011 was
organized to bring together worldwide leading researchers and
practitioners interested in advancing the state-of-the-art in Soft
Computing and Pattern Recognition, for exchanging knowledge that
encompasses a broad range of disciplines among various distinct
communities. The theme for this conference was focused on “Innovating
and Inspiring Soft Computing and Intelligent Pattern Recognition”. The
two students presented their papers among a panel of prestigious
presenters which includes Prof. Henri Prade and Prof. Francesco
Marcelloni. |
