Thieves break open ATM machine, Rs 6.6 m stolen

Thieves who broke open an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of the Bank of Ceylon, Kantale branch stole Rs.6.6 million, Police Spokesman SP Ajith Rohana told the Daily News.

The ATM had been broken open between 8 pm Thursday and 8am yesterday when the bank was closed, SP Rohana said.

Initial investigations revealed that the robbers were familiar with the bank’s set up. SP Rohana said bank authorities reported the incident to the Police on Friday morning after they found the ATM damaged and the money stolen.

“Two special police teams have been sent to Kantale to assist in the investigations conducted by Kantale Police,” he said.

No suspects have been arrested yet, he said. Investigations are being conducted with the support of video footages recorded by the camera installed inside the ATM.
