Master plan to develop primary, secondary schools

The Education Ministry will draft a master plan to develop 5,000 primary schools and 1,000 secondary schools islandwide immediately.

The programme is to be implemented from next year, Education Ministry sources said.

The implementation of school development programmes is aimed at providing the best education for children to face challenges, the sources said. The government has decided to prioritize the primary school network programme and the construction of 1,000 secondary schools aiming at a productive and quality education system.

The programme will be launched as a joint venture with foreign aid and funds from the government.

Arrangements have already been made to receive Rs 2,500 million as foreign aid.

The schools to be developed under this programme will be equipped with infrastructure facilities, including fully fledged computer laboratories with 50 computers, language laboratories, mathematical centres, Nenasa distance education centres, aesthetic education units, Advanced Level laboratories, vocational training centres and sports facilitation centres, the sources said.
