Lanka’s computer literacy rate best in South Asia

Computer literacy in Sri Lanka is about 35 percent and the main
objective of the government is to increase the computer literacy up to
75 percent by the year 2016.

Intel South Asia Managing Director Sales and Marketing R. Sivakumar
told Daily News Business that, the present computer literacy ratio in
Sri Lanka is better compared with the other countries in South Asia.
He also said that Intel has been successfully operating for more than
10 years in Sri Lanka. Intel’s efforts in Sri Lanka are to make ICT
education a key enabler for growth.
They have already trained more than 22,000 teachers in Western, Uva ,
Central, Sabaragamuwa, Northern, Eastern, Southern and Wayamba
provinces.
The Teach Teacher Professional Development Programme, which helps
teachers to be more effective educators by training them on how to
integrate technology into their lessons, promoting problem solving,
critical thinking and collaboration skills among their students.
The Intel school programmes cover over 1,500 schools and reached more
than 800,000 students throughout the country.
In addition to that Intel donated 500 Classmate PCs around the
country, through Intel World Ahead Programme which delivers education
resources in the forms of technology, Internet access, digital content,
and other activities.
The Infotel 2011 Annual exhibition was opened on December 2 at the
BMICH under the theme of Empowering tomorrow’s education. The exhibition
will continue up to today.
The exhibition will also feature presentation by industry experts
looking at the future in education and IT.
