Tools for farmers

A group of 1,500 farmers in Kandy have been provided with tools to be utilized in preparing organic fertilizer.

The Kandy District Agrarian Services office has provided these kits to farmers. Rs 4,500 has been allocated by this office to buy tools.


International Statistics Conference

The Institute of Applied Statistics, Sri Lanka, (IASSL) is organising the International Statistics Conference on December 28-30 at the Waters' Edge, Battaramulla in collaboration with the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and the University of Sydney, Australia. The theme for the conference is Statistical Concepts and Methods for the Modern World.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been invited to grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Prof C R Rao of the University of Pennsylvania, USA and Dr Nancy Geller, President of the American Statistical Association will deliver keynote speeches.

Around 125 statisticians from over 20 countries covering all six continents have been registered. Around 100 local statisticians are also expected to take part in the conference. Over 150 papers will be presented at the conference which will run into three days. This is the first time in history of Sri Lanka that an International Conference on Statistics with the participation of a large number of dignitaries is being held.


Workshop

A two day workshop on productivity for journalists jointly organised by the Government Information Department and the National Productivity Secretariat will be held on December 6 and 7 at the National Productivity Secretariat at no 318, High Level Road, Nugegoda.


Public seminar

A public seminar to discuss and review the proposed National Education Bill organised by the Campaign for a Better Education will be held at the Colombo New Town Hall on December 3 at 3 pm.


Seminar for journalists

The Trincomalee District Development Seminar for media personnel organized by the Information Department will be held at the Trincomalee District Secretary Office auditorium on December 3 at 9 am.

The seminar will enlighten the public through media personnel about development activities in the Trincomalee district and help media personnel improve their skills.

Trincomalee district politicians, the District Secretary Major General T.T.R. de Silva and Media Centre for National Development Director General Ariya Rubasinghe will attend this seminar.


Leadership courses

The National Cadet Corps has planned to conduct leadership and professional skills development courses for the benefit of its membership including both boys and girls from next year.

A workshop to educate students about this programme will be held at the National Cadet Corps Headquarters at no 15, Dutugemunu Street, Pamankada on November 30 from 9 am to 1 pm attended by a batch of 250 students said a press release issued by the Corps Headquarters yesterday.

The Colombo Race Course Morning Walkers have arranged an X'mas season get-together on Friday, December 2 at 7.30 pm at the "Light House Galley" on Chaithya Road, Galle Face (opposite the Light House) managed by the Sri Lanka Navy.

R.M. Srimali Dimuthu Kumari, an Advanced Level student of Mo/Medagama National School, Bibile in Moneragala District is suffering from Acoustin Neuroma, brian blood clot and has to undergo urgent brain operation at Apollo Speciality Hospital, India.

Brain Specialist Senior Surgeon K.A.S. Jayantha Balawardena said this rare operation will cost Rs. 1,500,000 excluding medicine and other expenses. Kumari is an all round student who has represented Sri Lanka in a Seven-a-side Soccer tournament in India in 2006 and won the tournament. Her father seeks assistance for her operation. Scholarships

On an initiative of the Sri Lanka Peace Secretariat, the Business for Peace Alliance of the Ceylon Chamber of commerce commenced in 2007, a scholarship programme entitled Learn and Lead was lauched. The purpose was to secure a good education for gifted children from difficult areas whose future schooling was uncertain. The scholarship was also intended to help young people from conflict affected areas in Sri Lanka to realize their leadership potential.
