Four fined for smoking in public places

Panadura magistrate R.S.A. Dissanayaka imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 each on four persons who pleaded guilty to smoking in a public place at the Panadura town.

Restaurant keepers who allowed them to smoke in the premises were also fined Rs 2,000 each.

They were produced before Court by the Panadura Police Anti-Vice Squad.


Monks off to Thailand

A group of Viharadhipathi including Asgiri Maha Nayake Udagama Sri Buddharakkhitha thera, Kataragama Kirivehera Viharadhipathi Aluthwewe Soratha thera, Madiwaka Devasiri thera and Kirimatiyane Wimalawansha thera will participate in the Thailand king's 85th birthday celebrations on December 5.

The theras will leave for Thailand on December 3. They will also participate in religious programmes to bless the Thai king.


Human rights film festival

The International Centre for Ethnic Studies, Colombo will hold a film festival from December 7 to 9 at the ICES Auditorium, 2, Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 8 to mark International Human Rights Day which falls on December 10. Three award winning films will be screened. Two shows will be screened everyday at 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm. The festival opens with the Canadian film Incendies on December 7.

Invictus will be screened on December 8 . Actor Morgan Freeman portrays an anti-apartheid activist and former South African President Nelson Mandela in this Clint Eastwood-heimed political drama.

The Whistleblower will be screened on December 9. This is a political thriller based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac, an American police officer who takes a job working as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia.


Evening of entertainment

The Sri Lanka Arab Union will host an evening of entertainment and buffet dinner at Ranmuthu Hotel today at 7.00 pm. A part of the proceeds will be used to fund scholarships of needy students in association with the Zahira College Old Boys' Union of 60s.


Awards ceremony

Pearl Hobby Craft awards ceremony will be held tomorrow at 10.30 am at the Manel Reception Hall, Colombo. Fathima Girls School Principal F. Mohamed will be the chief guest, Colombo University Lecturer Z Barry will be the guest of honour and Amana Bank Marketing manager Marshad Barry will be the guest speaker.


Anniversary

Wekanda Jumma Masjid Colombo will celebrate its 225 years anniversary and website launching ceremony tomorrow at 9. 30 am at the Masjid premises. Indonesian Ambassador in Sri Lanka Djafar Husein will be the chief guest. Malaysian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Azmi Zainuddin will be the guest of honour.


Members' Fellowship

Members' fellowship of the Sri Lanka-India Society will be held at the Taj Hotel, Colombo tomorrow at 7.00 pm. The Sri Lanka-India Society is the oldest friendship Society in the country, formed to promote the development and promotion of social and cultural relations between the people of Sri Lanka and the People of India. Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Ashok K Kantha will be the chief guest.


Student's deadly fall

An 11-year boy died after falling from a veralu tree.

This was revealed at the inquest held into the death of K A Sudharshana Lakmal Wijesinghe, a grade six student of the Kandu Palatha Vidyalaya in the Rideegama education division by K J N M Jayathilake, Inquirer in to Sudden Deaths in Madure Korale.

It was revealed that the student had gone to the school playground with some of his friends and had got on to a Veralu tree. He had later fallen from the tree.


Illegal loggers caught

Three persons who were cutting trees in the Ridiella forest reserve were caught by Dambulla Police with sawn timber.

They were fined Rs 10,000 each after being produced before the Dambulla magistrate.


Woman fined for selling moonshine

A woman who was found guilty of selling moonshine in Dambulla Kandalama area was fined Rs 50,000 by the Dambulla magistrate. The Police detected over 3,750 mls of kasippu in her possession at the time of arrest.


Screening of post Independence documentary films

A special screening of selected documentary films and newsreels produced by the Government Film Unit during the early post - Independence period will be presented by The Goethe Institute in partnership with the Government Film Unit, Department of Government Information at the Goethe Institute, 39, Gregory's Road, Colombo 07 on November 30 at 7pm.

These films form part of a large collection of Sri Lanka's finest historical and artistic documentary films produced during the early years of independence Ceylon and up to about 2008, now available in digital format.


Trade seminar

A seminar of International Trade organized by the Trade Finance Association of Bankers of Sri Lanka importers, Exporters, lawyers, bankers, shipping and insurance staff and those interested in international trade business will be held today at the Galadari Hotel

Friendship camp

A friendship camp for differently abled youths of Vavuniya and Badulla organized by the National Youth Services Council Youth Organization and Development Division will be held in Badulla from December 5 to 11.

Fifty youths from disabled youth clubs in Vavuniya will meet their Badulla counterparts.
