SL enjoys cordial relations with Russia - Minister Prof G L Peiris
Sri Lanka enjoys a supportive and satisfying relationship with the
Russian Federation, and deeply appreciates the consistent understanding
which Moscow has shown during the conflict as well as in respect of the
current initiatives regarding development and reconciliation after the
eradication of terrorism, External Affairs Minister Professor G L Peiris
said recently.
He was speaking at the Foundation Laying Ceremony for the Russian
Embassy building on Bauddhaloka Mawatha.
The time has come to expand and deepen the relationship, particularly
by developing its economic content, the minister said.
Prof. Peiris referred to the recent visit by President Mahinda
Rajapaksa to St. Petersburg to participate in the Economic Forum, at
which he had discussions with Russian President Dimitri Medvedev and
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Minister Peiris expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved
with regard to collaborative arrangements with Gazprom, the Russian gas
company which is a world leader in the field. Gazprom, whose
representatives were in Colombo recently, is expected to make a
significant contribution to the economic development of Sri Lanka in
several sectors including the supply of liquid natural gas and the
improvement of refinery facilities in the country.
Prof. Peiris mentioned the recent visit to Moscow by Petroleum
Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha, who was present as President of
the Sri Lanka - Russia Parliamentary Friendship Association. Russian
Ambassador Vladimir Mikhaylov said that the land purchased in Colombo by
his government 25 years ago, is being utilized for the construction of a
self-contained complex of buildings including the Chancery, residence
and sports and education facilities for the staff of the embassy.
Russian External Affairs Ministry Director General Mikhail Vanin also
participated in the ceremony.
