China opposed to new Iran sanctions
CHINA: The Chinese government has once again dismissed the recent
calls by certain Western countries to impose new economic sanctions on
Iran, Press TV reports.
“Simply put, we think pressure (including blindly using economic
sanctions) cannot achieve results we still think dialogue and
cooperation is the best way,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu
Weimin said in a press conference in Beijing on Monday.
Liu noted that his country believes that “there is still room for
dialogue and cooperation so we must make every effort.”
The spokesman added that China was opposed to any new conflict in the
Middle East because it would be against the interests of the region and
the entire world.
Last week, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a
report claiming that Iran has engaged in activities aimed at developing
nuclear weapons.
Iran has rejected the report as “unbalanced and politically
motivated,” saying its nuclear program is for civilian purposes only.
The US and some of their allies have used the report as a pretext to
impose new sanctions on Tehran.
Iran argues that, as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty and a member of the IAEA, it has the right to develop and acquire
nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. Press TV
