New certification to produce knowledgeable workforce

The Vocational Training Authority (VTA) has introduced an internationally recognized certification for computer literacy called the Internet and Computer Core Certification (IC3) for Sri Lankan youth to produce a productive workforce with the knowledge of modern technology.

This certification is provided by the Certiport Institute in the United States of America. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the VTA and the Certiport on IC3.

The VTA has taken measures to issue this certificate for students studying in 270 VTA training centres islandwide.

The VTA will accommodate 300 students initially for the programme. Students who are not following courses at VTA centres can obtain this certificate through Certiport-authorized testing centres which will be established in all districts by the VTA.

The IC3 provides students and job seekers the basic knowledge to succeed in environments that require the use of computers and the internet. The IC3 is an internationally recognized standard for digital literacy and reflects the most relevant skills needed in today's academic and business environment, said Vocational Training Authority Chairman Dhammika Hewapathirana addressing the launching ceremony of the IC3 held recently at Cinnamon Grand Hotel, Colombo.

He said the IC3 will help refine aptitude in the most important areas and it will also help teachers and instructors enhance students' proficiency and marketable skills as they enter the workforce.

The VTA has already taken measures to provide guidance for IC3 examinations in the Sinhala medium and examinations will also be conducted in the Sinhala medium in the future for Sinhala medium students.

Further details can be obtained through www.certiport.com.

Youth Affairs Deputy Minister Duminda Dissanayake, Tech One Global CEO Lars Jeppesen, Certiport and IC3 Credential Manager Gary Fluitt and other distinguished guests participated at the launching ceremony.
