Prior to this school being built, the children pursued their
education in very poor conditions and even had to contribute to the rent
of the building where the classes were held. After assessing the need
for a pre-school in the village, Muslim Aid Sri Lanka provided monetary
assistance to put up a permanent building which will house 40 children
all below the age of 5. The 800 square feet school also has two office
rooms, a toilet and the entire necessary infrastructure for the children
to receive a proper education.
The event however was more than just a pre-school opening. It took
place a few days after MASL celebrated Muslim Aid Day under the theme of
"Universal Primary Education" for all, at the Colombo Public Library
with an exhibition called "Rainbows and Art" which displayed the works
of the children who are currently benefitting from the Rainbow Family
Programme implemented by MASL since 2007.
The programme helps educate children who have been either orphaned or
come from destitute homes located throughout the country.
This very same exhibition travelled to Batticaloa much to the joy of
the Mancholai residents who flocked in to admire the works of the
Rainbow Children.
The chief guest at the event was the Zonal Director of Education
Batticaloa Central Zone Jainudeen and the guest of honour was Asa dur
Rahman, Chief of Filed Office ( UNICEF) in Batticaloa. Country Director
of Muslim Aid Sri Lanka, Faizer Khan was also present at this event.
