Public celebrations to mark Southern Expressway launch

The government will provide a rare opportunity for the people to
visit and enjoy the marvels of modern road construction on the Southern
Expressway on November 19 and 20.

The public can walk freely on the Southern highway and participate in
several sports competitions which will be conducted at all interchanges
of Kottawa, Kahathuduwa, Galanigama, Dodangoda, Welipenna,
Kurudugahahethakama, Baddegama and Pinnaduwa during two days from 2pm to
8pm.
Ports and Highways Deputy Minister Nirmala Kothalawala said this
opportunity for the people to freely walk along the Southern expressway
will be only opened for vehicular transport after November 27.
The deputy minister invites the public to visit the Southern
expressway and participate in sports competitions to be conducted on
Kottawa, Kahathuduwa, Galanigama, Dodangoda on November 19 and
Welipenna, Kurudugahahethakma, Baddegama and Pinnaduwa on November 20.
Several sports activities including road races, cycle race,
volleyball, art competitions for children and several other sports
competitions will be held with the participation of disabled soldiers of
the Rana Viru Seva Authority during the two days. In addition a
colourful fireworks display will also be held on each night.
Winners of all competitions will receive prizes from the Road
Development Authority, he further said. Meanwhile, pirith chanting
ceremonies will be held at all interchanges of the Southern highway on
November 18.
