‘President aims for a realistic budget’
As a person who advocates democracy, the split or
break up of any Opposition political party is not a reason to be
joyful. The country needs a very strong Opposition, whether we are
in power or not. The duty of the Opposition is to settle their
differences and serve the people and the country because the
Opposition has a great role to play in Parliamentary democracy. Not
only the JVP but also the UNP has split. We do not know whether this
is due to ideological or personal reasons. Whatever the reason, it
may affect the people of Sri Lanka. As we are in the government, one
might say that we welcome such divisions, fractions and weakening of
the Opposition. But we do not hope for such situations,

Can we be – and stay friends?

Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines the
term criticism thus: ‘Looking for faults or pointing out faults.’
The two definitions are at two different extremes. One looks for
mistakes or finds faults and it can be deliberate. The other
definition points out mistakes and it can be helpful or encouraging.
