Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena opened Hemals Thalassemia Care Unit at Mahara, Kadawatha yesterday. The Thalassemia Care Unit was built on a property valued at Rs 500 million, donated to the Health Ministry by Hemalatha Malini Ariyaratne. The government spent around Rs. 25 million for the project. The unit can accommodate 25 in-house patients. Thalassemia patients in the Western Province were earlier treated at a room at the Ragama Teaching Hospital. Thalassemia patients in the Western Province can also obtain treatment from this Thalassemia Care Unit free of charge. Minister Mervyn Silva and MP Sudharshani Fernandopulle also participated.
