Principal in timber racket

A principal of a leading school in Wilgamuwa has gone missing following the uncovering of a timber racket. Police investigations revealed that five Lunumidella trees which were in the school premises, had allegedly been removed by the principal without any permission. The public had made a complaint to Wilgamuwa Police in this connection.


Tree planting project

A tree planting project has been launched by the Forest Department to protect the Kahatagolla hill off Hunnasgiriya, Uda Dumbara. Trees such as, Etamba, Batadomba, Karanda, Kududavula, Mal-ehala and Siyambala will be planted in barren areas of the hill.

The reforestation project will be carried out through its office of Hunnasgiriya.

A large area of the Kahatagolla Pathana hill has been damaged by fires and soil erosion, sources said.


Course in Agricultural Communication

The Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute (HARTI) will introduce a six-month diploma course in Agricultural Communication in collaboration with the Kelaniya University,said HARTI Director Lalkantha Jayasekara. The course will be held at weekends or two evenings of weekdays. The aim of the diploma course is to give a good knowledge of local and foreign agricultural communication and to create a competitive agrarian society in Sri Lanka. RD


Sri Sumangala Anniversary

The 89 anniversary celebrations of the old boys' day of Sri Sumangala College, Panadura began yesterday. Celebratory activities will also be held on tomorrow. The Sri Sumangala College Old Boys' Association was inaugurated on October 28, 1922.

The main activities on October 30 will include health camp, service of eye specialists, blood donation camp, certificate awarding to college students and handing over scholarships to students selected to universities.


Anniversary celebrations

The 40th anniversary celebrations of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority will be held at the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council Auditorium, Ratnapura on November 1 under the patronage of Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.

Concurrent to the celebrations, a gem and jewellery exhibition will be conducted at the venue on November 1 and 2. It will be open to the public free of charge daily from 10 am to 6 pm. There will also be a special gem auction at the Authority's Ratnapura Regional Office on November 1 at 5 pm, said Natural Gem and Jewellery Authority chairman General Rohan Daluwatte.


Mid year conference

The mid year conference of Toastmasters International Division I of District 82 will be held tomorrow at the ICTAD Auditorium, Savsiripaya, 123, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.

The main feature of this conference is the exciting evaluation and humorous speech contests where 24 of the contestants who had competed at club and area levels vie to be the best at division level.


Samurdhi Kekulu festival

The national festival of the Samurdhi Kekulu children's organization will be held tomorrow at 10 am at the Vavuniya Tamil Maha Vidyalaya under the patronage of Economic Development Deputy Minister Mutthu Shivalingam.

This festival will be held with the participation of Kandy, Matale, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Jaffna, Badulla, Puttalam, Batticaloa, Ampara and Vavuniya districts, District Coordinating Secretary, H. Dharmadasa said.


Academic sessions

The annual academic sessions of the Sri Lanka College of Venereologists began on October 27 and ends today. The inauguration of the 16th annual scientific sessions was held at Galle Face Hotel, Colombo yesterday. The chief guest was consultant physician, GU/HIV Medicine attached to Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital, London UK, Dr. Ranjababu Kulasegaram. Speeches were delivered by Sri Lanka College of Venereologists president Dr. Chandrika Wickramasuriya, founder president Dr. Lucian Jayasuriya (Dr. Gamini Jayakuru Oration) and secretary Dr. Rasanga Liyanage.


Prize giving

Wisdom International College, Beruwala will hold its annual prize-giving tomorrow at 2 pm at Jabir Hajiar Memorial Hall, Al-Humaisara National School, China Fort, Beruwala. Wisdom International College director M.H.M. Fowsar will preside.


Orientation

The orientation programme for the newly admitted first year students to the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce and Faculty of Science, University of Jaffna for the academic year 2010/2011 will recommence on November 2 at 9am. The new students are requested to participate in the orientation programme without fail.

Academic activities for other students of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce and Faculty of Science will commence on November 2.


Tissa walk

The Kalutara Tissa Central College walk will commence tomorrow at 8 00 am.

The walk is organized by Tissa Central College Old Boys' Association with the collaboration of Principal, Maithripala Liyanarachchi.


Vacation extension

Except for the new students of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka registered for the academic year 2010/2011, vacation period of all 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th year student have been extended till November 6.

The students who occupy hostel facilities are requested to report to their hostels on November 6.
