Alawwa train accident:

Committee final report to be presented to minister

The final report of the special investigation committee appointed to look into the Alawwa train accident will be presented to Transport Minister Kumara Welgama on November 1.

The three member committee led by former Supreme Court Judge Nimal Dissanayake was appointed by Minister Welgama to probe the train collision on September 17.

The committee obtained evidence as well as views from around 25 persons including additional driver, assistant guard of the Polgahawela-bound passenger train and driver, assistant driver and guards of the Kandy-bound express train, engineers, representatives from railway trade unions and railway general manager B A P Ariyaratne to find out the reason for the mishap while also assessing the damage.
