Central Schools sports festival:

Karandeniya Central Twenty20 champions

Karandeniya Central College emerged champions at the Twenty20 cricket tournament at the Central Schools Sports Festival, by beating Ibbagamuwa Central by three wickets in the final played at the Steel Corporation grounds, Oruwala.

Ibbagamuwa Central who batted first were bundled out for 58 runs in 16 overs with I M Ratnayake capturing three wickets for 17. Karandeniya Central reached the victory target of 59 with Namal Deshantha making 18.

Karandeniya Central entered the final by overcoming S de S Jayasinghe Central, while Ibbagamuwa Central beat Akuramgoda Central in the other semi-final.

Thirty six Central Schools took part in this Twenty20 tournament of the sports festival held to mark the death anniversary of Dr C W W Kannangara, former Minister of Education.

Tissa Central College, Kalutara clinched the netball tournament by overcoming Ibbagamuwa Central College in the final while Rajasinghe Central College, Ruwanwella bagged the volleyball championship by beating Senanayake Central College, Madampe.

Anuradhapura Central took the women’s volleyball title by defeating Madampe Central in the final.

The champion teams in all three sports received a trophy and Rs 50,000 in cash while the runners-up were given Rs 35,000. Forty schools took part in the sports festival.
