Seminar
The Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) will conduct a one day
seminar on 'Challenges in creating a Reading Society' on October 20,
2011 to celebrate the October-National Reading Month.
Specific issues in writing, translating, publishing, information
literacy, LIS field, impact on the ICT and new media pertaining to
reading promotion will be discussed at the seminar by experienced
academics and practitioners in creative writing, publishing, information
literacy, LIS and ICT fields. Dr Nihal Jayatileke, Secretary, Ministry
of Local Government and Provincial Council will be the Chief Guest at
the inauguration ceremony.
Prof. Sunanda Mahendra will deliver the keynote address titled
'Social Development through Reading'. The seminar will be held at the
NILIS auditorium, University of Colombo.
Death of Makavitage Joseph Marcelene Perera
Well-known social worker and businessman Makavitage Joseph Marcelene
Perera of No. 6, Thembiligasmulle, Makola North, Makola father-in-law of
former Director General of the Economic Development Ministry and
Executive Committee Member of the Sri Lanka Football Federation Lakshman
Hewapanne expired on October 15. The funeral will be held on October 19
at 4.30 p.m. at the Pamunuwila Roman Catholic cemetery.
Katina Pinkama
The Katina Pinkama of Asokaramaya Temple, Colombo 5 will be held on
October 30 (Sunday).
The Katina Perahera will begin from Sambuddha Jayanthi Mawatha
(Havelock Road), Keppetipola, Kassapa Road, Jawatte Road and
Thimbirigasyaya Road.
It will be preceded by a series of Dhamma sermons from October 24 to
28. An all night pirith ceremony will be held on October 29 (Saturday).
The Fund Management System for the Army Benevolent Fund was
launched by Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga at
the Directorate of Army Benevolent Fund, Army Cantonment,
