Sri Lanka has the potential to take its place in emerging Asia, which
is transforming the current global political and economic balance of
power.
Therefore, the future of Sri Lanka is bright as the human resource
capabilities are strong compared to many other countries, ILO Country
Office Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives Donglin Li speaking at
the inauguration of National Technical Workshop on the formulation of
the National Human Resources and Employment Policy at Taj Samudra Hotel
Colombo yesterday said.
He said that sound education and training policy and labour market
policy could provide an important instrument to offset the negative
impacts of globalization, at the same time equipping people with the
knowledge and skills to take advantage of the emerging opportunities in
domestic and international labour market.
There must be concerted efforts to ensure that the development and
growth translate to better skills of the labour force , decent jobs and
quality of life for the people through the development of its human
resource capabilities and promotion of employment, he said.
Secretariat for Senior Ministers Secretary Mahinda Madihahewa said
the economic goals of the country can be achieved by the creation of
appropriate human resources that would serve the country’s labour
market’s demand and by supplementing the employment policy. He said that
generation of human resources is a long term process and therefore
sustained efforts must be made by the State as well as other
stakeholders through an appropriate human resources policy and its
effective implementation. Further, the available human resources have to
be reinforced with life long learning so that the uselessness of
competencies does not occur, he said. |
