Policeman slashed to death

A policeman was slashed to death at the national housing scheme in Modera, Moratuwa around 1 am yesterday while trying to bring a brawl between two factions under control. M G V C Samarawickrama, 28, succumbed to his injuries in the Panadura hospital.

Samarawickrama and a team of police officers including the Modera police point OIC had gone to the area to investigate a dispute between two groups following a complaint they received.

Police media sources stated that by the time the police team arrived at the scene, the two factions had turned violent. The constable was assaulted with swords and knives when the Police tried to bring the situation under control.

Another person who was involved in the brawl was admitted to the Panadura Hospital. No suspects have been arrested. Panadura police are investigating.
