Navarathiri Festival

The Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs will hold Navarathiri Festival on October 7 at Wellawatte, Ramakrishna Mission Hall commencing at 5 pm.

Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne will be the chief guest while the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Buddha Sasana M.K.A.D.S. Gunawardane, High Commissioner of India Ashok K. Kantha and Secretary of the Ministry of Buddha Sasana K. Herath will be the guests of honour.

Director of the Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs Shanthi Navukkarasan will preside and M.K. Kandeepan will deliver the welcome speech.


 


SLMA International conference

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena will be the Chief Guest today at the Sri Lanka Medical Association’s (SLMA) International Conference and exhibition to be held at the Taj Samudra hotel.

The programme is scheduled to commence at 5.30 p.m.

While the SLMA president Prof. Vajira Dissanayke will welcome the Minister Maithripala Sirisena the key note address is to be delivered by the Association’s past president Representative Dr. Dennis J. Aloysius who is also a committee member of the Daily News associated World First Centenarian Study and Welfare Association of Sri Lanka headed by Prof. Colvin Gooneratna.

Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Ravindra Ruberu is the guest of honour at this meeting.


Prize giving

The annual prize giving of Malharus Sulhiya Central College, Galle will be held on October 4 at the college auditorium.

The chief guest will be Piyasena Gamage National Resources Senior Minister Guest of Honour Galle District Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara.


Lecture

Prof. Mohan Munasinghe, who shared the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace, as Vice Chair of the United Nations Inter-Governmental Panel on Climatic Change and considered a leading world authority on sustainable development, energy and the environment, will deliver a lecture on “Integrating Climatic Change Policies into Sustainable Development Strategy-Lessons for Sri Lanka.”

The illustrated lecture, under the auspicious of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 6 pm.

The venue will be the Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka (Wimalasurendra Auditorium), 120/15, Vidya Mawatha, off Wijerama Mawatha (BMICH end), Colombo 7. Entrance is free.


Youth stabbed

A youth aged 18 died at Pulathisigama hospital after being stabbed at a musical show at Jayanthi Primary School, Debaralla, Hingurakgoda yesterday around 1 am.

Police said the victim, U Chathuranga Manoj alias Vasana of Pansal Watta, Sambodigama was stabbed when an argument between two groups at the musical show went beyond limits.
