Colombo BC take Carlton Cup

Colombo BC proudly walked away with the Carlton Cup 2011 Basketball Champion trophy when they comfortably beat the host Carlton BC (92-59) in the 'A' division final match at the Police Park courts on Saturday.

Winners took the lead in the second quarter after a point to point battle which kept both teams in equal terms (16 each) in the first quarter. The game scaled in favour of Colombo BC as they restricted Carlton attack to nine points while adding 19 to them in the second quarter. Colombo cagers were 10 points ahead midway (35-25). Winners consolidated their attack in the third quarter by scoring 34 points against 17 from opponents and never allowed Carlton players to make inroads to the game.

They continued with the same fashioned play in the final quarter as losers found difficult to put up any resistance and won the match with a huge 33 point margin.

Roshan Fernando's 30 points and Roshan Randima's 27 points was the best from winners while M, Abeysekera (12 points) and S. Senanayaka (11 points) were the highest contributors for the winners.

In the 'B' division finals, Carlton 'B' team defeated Peterites (77-63). Carlton players dominated through out the game except in the final quarter where losers scored ahead them (25-16). Winners posted a seven point lead at half time (36-29) and increased it in the following quarter by scoring 25 points while giving away just nine points. Dhammika Perera and Rashmika Lawrence added 22 and 15 points respectively for Carlton BC while L. Samarasinghe (21 points) and S. Paiva were the chief scorers for the losers.

Colombo International School defeated Lyceum International School in a close contest (18-17) in the under 13 girls championship final while S. Thomas's College, Mount Lavinia won the boys under 13 championship by beating Lyceum International School, Nugegoda in the final (27-23).

Namal Rajapaksa, MP and Yoshitha Rajapaksa were the chief guests at the closing ceremony and gave away the awards.
