Ex-Rajans cricketer A.S. Ekanayake dies

Anura Ekanayake, former Captain of Kandy Cricket Club passed away on
September 11 (Sunday).
Popularly known as "A.S." the former cricketer of Dharmaraja College
was in the victorious 1980 Dharmaraja Cricket team in the Annual Big
Match against Kingswood under Janaka Mendis "A.S." kept wickets.
After leaving school A.S. joined Tobacco Company in 1980 and played
Cricket for the Company at the Mercantile 'A' Division Cricket
tournament for a number of years along with Mahinda Pethiyagoda, M.
Sherifdeen, Sunil Wickremanayake, Tissa Wijeratne, Janaka Weerasinghe
and Lalith Wijeratne to name a few. He also represented Kandy Cricket
Club and started playing under Mahinda Pethiyagoda, his schoolmate in
the Sara Trophy Cricket tournament and played for eight years. Later on
he captained the team.
His funeral will be held on September 14 (Wednesday) at the Mahaiyawa
Cemetery, Kandy at 4 p.m.
