Lankan women spikers for Asian Senior C’ships

The Sri Lankan Women’s Volleyball National team will leave the island
today to participate in the 16th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball
Championships, 2011 which will be held in Chinese Taipei from September
15 to 23.
The team comprises 12 women spikers and six officials. This year 14
countries are taking part in the tournament in four groups . Chinese
Taipei, Iran and Indonesia are in group A while group B comprises of
Thailand, Vietnam and Australia. China, Kazakhstan , North Korea and
India are in group C. Sri Lanka is in group D with Japan, South Korea
and Tajikistan.
Sri Lanka will battle it out with South Korea in their first game on
September 15 and the second encounter has been scheduled for the very
next day where they meet Japan and the last match in the first round is
on September 17, Tajikistan being the opponent. The games will be held
at Taipei Urban Council Courts.
The semi finals and finals will be held on September 23 and Sri
Lankan team will return the following day.
International volleyball judge Priyantha Senaviratne will be a
tournament referee on an invitation by Asian Volleyball Federation.
Last year Thailand emerged champions while China and Japan were
positioned second and third respectively. Sri Lanka were placed at the
bottom of the ranking list which included 14 countries.
This year’s tournament will give the Lankan women spikers the much
needed foreign exposure which will stand them in good stead in future
international tournaments.
