Junior Athletic C’ships off to a wet start

Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletic Championship got off to a wet start
with heavy rains falling on the first day at the Bogambara Stadium,
Kandy yesterday.
The opening ceremony was graced by the Director of the Sports and
Physical Education of Department of Education Rohan Karunaratne as the
chief guest while Brand Manager for Milo was the guest of honour. A
total of 35 events mostly the heats were worked off but heavy rains fell
for over one hour towards the end making the stadium muddy and look like
a miniature pool.
Over 4,000 junior athletes from schools from all parts of the island
are expected in this meet which will conclude on Thursday. Winners of
yesterday’s finals:
Under 14 Boys Javelin Throw: S Asalanka (Seventh Day Adventist

Under 15 Boys Put Shot: W M A M Madusanka (Wennappuwa Junior School)
Under 15 Girls Discus Throw: H U M G Charika Rasangani (Agrabodhi
Junior School, Matale)
Under 12 Boys Long Jump: T S Thenuka Rajapaksa (St Benedict’s
College, Kotahena)
Under 13 Girls High Jump: K J K Piumi Wijeratne (St Berrawerts
College, Ampitiya)
Under 14 Girls Long Jump:P N Ginimille (Loyala International School,
Kochchikade)
Under 14 Girls Javelin Throw: W M A M Maneesha (St Rita Vidyalaya,
Wennappuwa)
