Carlton Cup Basketball tournament:

Navy BC tame Old bens

Navy Basketball Club tamed Old Bens (70-57) in their Carlton Cup Basketball match at the Depot Police courts yesterday. Sailors were on the back seat during the first quarter as Old Bens were leading with two points (12-14) but Navy made a comeback in the second quarter and registered a four point lead at mid way (30-26).

They kept the opponents under control in the third quarter and increased the lead towards the end (50-41), never allowing their rivals to make inroads. Navy BC won the match with a 13 points lead in the end. I Nishanthan (19 points) and S. Jayasinghe (16 points) were the top contributers for the winners while M. Eranda (17 points) and L Siri (10 points) were the best for the losers.

In a division ‘B’ match played at the Police Park courts, Peterites Basketball Club beat Air Force ‘B’ team (62-48).

Peterites took a 14-8 lead against their rivals in the first quarter. Half time scores read 28-20 in favour of the Peterites.

Winners increased the gap in the third quarter while losers missed some easy baskets and could not resist the Peterite attack. Though Airmen scored 20 points while the winners scored 17 in the final quarter, Peterites won the match with a comfortable 14 point lead in the end. L. Samarasinghe added 28 and J. Fernando scored eight points for the winning team while Shanaka Weerasinghe with 20 points and Mohommed Shabreen with 12 points contributed for the losers.

In another division ‘B’ match at the Amal International School courts, Red Caps BC defeated Old Anandians team (80-57). Winners were just a one point ahead after a close fight in the first quarter (18-17) but built up the gap and posted a commendable 18 point lead at half time (42-27).

They continued with the same style and clinched the victory with a 23 point margin. A. Dasanayake and D. Jayawickrema scored 25 and 16 points respectively for the winning team, while D. Menaka (23 points) and K. Samarasekera (12 points) were the best scorers for the losing team.
