Plantations Industries Minister and President’s envoy on human rights Mahinda Samarasinghe briefed at the 18th session of the UN Human Rights Council on the measures taken by the government to protect and promote human rights in Sri Lanka

According to Environment Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa who was also in the delegation, many countries, including, China, Pakistan and the Maldives expressed their support to Sri Lanka at this session.

He said that Maldivian President Mohammed Nasheed, who also participated in the session, made remarks in support of Sri Lanka.

The minister said that the submission made by the Sri Lankan delegation was a success. He added that the documentary “Lies Agreed Upon”, which was produced to keep the international community informed of what actually happened during the humanitarian operation in Sri Lanka, was also screened before the Council.

Minister Yapa pointed out that the screening of this documentary before the UN human rights body is a victory for Sri Lanka. He added that this documentary gave a clear picture to the member states of the Human Rights Council of the government’s endeavour to free over 300,000 innocent civilians who were held hostage by the LTTE terrorists at the last stage of war.
