Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) UPFA candidate Milinda Moragoda
visited 15 neighbourhoods of Colombo North and met residents from all
communities, including a fishing community in Mutwal.
He visited several community centres which were badly dilapidated and
left abandoned. Some of these were only half finished and had never been
completed. Moragoda visited several playgrounds which were in ruins.
Many residents told him that undesirables and criminals frequented these
areas posing a threat to the community. esidents told Moragoda that
many politicians came and had a look around, but never did anything.
The young people in the area were full of expectations. Moragoda
explained to them his intention to develop the playing fields and to set
up sports clubs that would help administer these grounds.
He also explained that if these were refurbished, that they, too, would
have to take part in looking after them, so that they could become
stakeholders in their neighbourhood. Along the way, a man and a woman
stopped his car to show him a garbage dump and said that five children
in their community were sick and in hospital with infections due to
this. They pleaded with Moragoda to do something. There are many
pressing issues that urgently need attention, they said. Moragoda said:
“I see a lot of scope for the private and non-governmental sector to
partner with the CMC and the involvement of the community is vital.
There is much work to be done. I hope that we do not get distracted by
politics.” |
