Sil at Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya:
A batch of 2,600 nurses participated in a sil campaign held
at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya in the presence of
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday. Here the President
participating in religious observances held at the Kelaniya
Bodhi premises. Viharadhipati Ven Prof Kollupitiye
Sangharakkhita Nayaka Thera, Public Service United Nurses
Union (PSUNU) President Ven Muruttettuwe Ananda Thera and
Minister Mervyn de Silva were also present. The sil campaign
was jointly organised by the PSUNU and the School of Nursing

Kalladi bridge opening soon
Batticaloa group corr
Construction work on the Kalladi Bridge launched by the Economic
Development Ministry at a cost of Rs 600 million will be completed by
June next year. This was disclosed by Batticaloa GA Sundaram
Arumeinayagam during an inspection tour of the work site on Sunday.
Artists camp, exhibition
The Artist Camp and Exhibition will conclude at the J.D.A. Perera Art
Gallery at 6 p.m. today. The artists representing Bangladesh, Maldives,
Pakistan and Sri Lanka had a fruitful creative and interactive camp over
the last two days.
They painted on site, within the theme “Unity in
Diversity-Contemporary Modern Art”. Whilst the exhibition features work
of art from the nominated artists. This is the first time a camp with
artists from the region has been hosted in Sri Lanka.
TU action
The Union of Agricultural Research and Production Assistants of Sri
Lanka has decided to continue its trade union action demanding a
solution to the problems of its membership totalling 9,600.
The union has also decided to launch a protest campaign opposite the
Agrarian Services Department head office on September 15 if the Director
General of Agrarian Services fails to stop the demarcation of the
respective (duty) divisions of the Agricultural Research and Production
Assistants ignoring the decision of the Minister in Charge of the
subject, said union’s Press Secretary Chinthaka C. Gunadasa in a press
release yesterday.
Houses for the homeless

The Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities
Minister Wimal Weerawansa has taken steps to launch 10 Housing projects
for homeless families in the Anuradhapura District under the Deyata
Kirula programme.
The ministry has earmarked three locations for three such housing
projects in the district.
The location used at Kebithigollewa, Oyamaduwa and Central Gam
Palatha Katukeliyawa.
Under each project, 50 houses would be constructed by the Ministry.
These houses will be provided for homeless families in the district.
Death of ex-ANCL employee
The
death occurred of Etin Nannethie, ex-Security Deputy Manager of ANCL,
who served the company from 1982 to 1995. He was 87 years at the time of
his death. He served Sri Lanka Police as an Inspector of Police before
joining ANCL.
He leaves his son Sunil Nannethie, who served in the ANCL Production
Department for 10 years.
His mortal remains lie at 163/5, Wattegedara Road, Maharagama.
Funeral will take place at Godigamuwa General Cemetery, Maharagama on
September 7 at 3 pm.
Death of Alfred Edirisinghe
The death occurred of Alfred Edirisinghe of Thalalla, Matara. He was
75. Edirisinghe who pioneered in establishing the Colombo branch of
Matara St. Thomas’ College Old Boys’ Association was the proprietor of
Alfred Edirisinghe Group of Companies. His remains are lying at his
residence at Nawala. The funeral will take place at General Cemetery,
Borella, tomorrow.
