Minister invites Colombo residents: ‘help make the city a centre of
excellence’

Youth Affairs Minister Dullas Alahapperuma yesterday requested the
political parties and the public not to make the Colombo Municipal
Council election a competition between UPFA and UNP but to treat it from
a wider perspective considering it to be made a decisive juncture where
Colombo is to be a centre of excellence in the South Asian region.

He made this observation at the press conference in connection with
the launch of the policy platform of the UPFA Colombo mayoral candidate
Milinda Moragoda entitled ‘Making Colombo a Centre of Excellence’ held
at the Mahaweli Centre auditorium.
The Minister further requested all other political parties in the
fray to quit the traditional political campaigns of inciting residents
of tenement gardens, using polythene and engaging in verbal wars to gain
political power.
He further stated that this election was very crucial in the attempt
to highly develop Colombo, which was described as the most unsafe city
in the world two years ago.
He added that Colombo was also identified as the city in which the
highest number of claymores exploded during the thirty years ended in
2009.
He said that the public should put a fullstop to the era that decided
power in Colombo by means of thuggery, underworld activities, and
handouts such as a packet of ‘Biriyani’. He added that certain political
parties think in terms of the late 1940s when these political parties
were founded and act accordingly though the world is growing rapidly.
Minister Alahapperuma also stated it is expected to develop Colombo
to be the city of renaissance, city of friendship and a city of
cooperation with the implementation of the UPFA mayoral candidate’s
manifesto.
He also invited all Colombo citizens, Sri Lankans and Sri Lankan
expatriates who love Colombo to join hands in this attempt to make
Colombo an attractive and developed city. |
