Raids on hooch dens

Pugoda STF officers arrested a woman with 380 drams of illicit liquor four barrels of goda and equipment used to brew the hooch. The suspect, a resident of Alubodala, Kosgama, was handed over to Kosgama police. She was released on bail. Meanwhile, Walana Central Anti Vice Squad, Panadura arrested a suspect with 24 barrels of goda in Muthurajawela.

Man nabbed for hijacking van

Negombo police took into custody a suspect who hijacked a van valued at Rs 1.6 million in Periyamulla, Negombo. Police also seized the van. The suspect was to he produced before the Negombo magistrate yesterday. Negombo police are investigating.

Man dies of stab injuries

A 46-year-old man died of stab injuries after being admitted to the Kandy hospital. Investigations revealed that Muttiah Malavaraj was stabbed near the Nuwarawela Bodhiya in Ampitiya.

Kandy police arrested a suspect in this connection. A personal dispute had led to the incident, police said.

The accused was produced before the Kandy Magistrate's court.

Motorcyclist dies in crash

A motorcyclist knocked down by a van at Pallowita, Kegalla succumbed to his injuries.

The victim was identified as W R Ranasinghe of Arawwala, Beragala, Kegalle.

The van driver produced before the Kegalle Magistrate court was released on bail.

Investigations are continuing. Meanwhile, a motorcyclist and the pillion rider were admitted to Kegalle hospital after sustaining injuries when the motorcycle skidded and crashed into an electrical post.

The pillion rider Sunil Sampath of Sapugasthenna, Halabada died at hospital later.

Kegalle police are investigating.
