S M Jiffrey ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Correspondent
Death occurred in Kandy yesterday of former S Thomas' College
cricketer and Central Province Cricket Association president and Kandy
District Cricket Association and former Justice Deputy Minister and
Northern Province Governor Shelton Ranaraja after a brief illness. He
played in the local cricket tournaments till he was over 50 years of age
and even scored a century in one of them. He was long time captain of
the Kandy Lawyers' Cricket Team.
At S Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, he was a fine batsman and played
for Law College.
Late Shelton Ranaraja would not approve of this and fought at several
forums against the use of a sport venue for carnivals. That was the
beginning of the end for the Bogambara Carnival. This resulted in the
development of the Bogambara Stadium which is now used only for sports.
His funeral will take place tomorrow at 10 am at Mahaiyawa General
Cemetery, Kandy.
