Nigel and Kandy SC - the most popular
Talented young CR and FC fly half Nigel Ratwatte and the mighty Kandy
Sports Club were richly rewarded when they were voted as the Most
Popular Ruggerite, 2010 and Most Popular Rugby Club, 2010 by the readers
of the Sunday Observer and received the glittering Caltex Trophies at a
ceremony held at the SLRFU Headquarters on Friday.
Ratwatte who captained the Trinity under 13 team left for South
Africa where his parents were employed and turned out for King Edward
College, Johannesburg, South Africa and had the rare honour of playing
for the Mauritius national team in 2007 and 2008. After returning to Sri
Lanka in 2009 he played for CR and FC as their fly half in 2010 and
played a key role in their success last year in which the Red Shirts
emerged runners up in the Caltex 'A' Division League Tournament missing
the title by a mere 0.50 points and also bagged the rugby sevens title
after 14 years.
Kandy Sports Club led by Sri Lanka fly half Fazil Marija retained the
Caltex 'A' Division League title for a record 10th successive year and
also won the Rugby Double by overcoming Navy by 26-11 in the Clifford
Cup final. The forwards gave a power packed display while the three
quarters turned in a dazzling display of open rugby. The most popular
rugby player and club contests were organized by the Sunday Observer and
Chevron Lubricants.
The most popular Ruggerite, 2010 Nigel Ratwatte received his trophy
from the Chief Editor of the Sunday Observer Dinesh Weerawansa while the
skipper of the most popular Rugby Club 2010 Kandy SC's Fazil Marija
received the trophy from the Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron
Lubricants Kishu Gomes.
