Science take Rugby Sevens title

Science College, Mount Lavinia came up with a stupendous performance
to clinch the Cup Championship of the Zahira College Invitation Rugby
Sevens with a smashing 47 points (six goals, one try), to 28 (four
goals) win over Vidyartha College, Kandy in the final played at the
Royal College sports complex yesterday.
The lads from Mount Lavinia under the leadership of Richie Dananjaya
turned in a dazzling display of open rugby to cross the opponents goal
line on four occasions in the first half to take a 26-14 lead at the
breather. They continued their dominance in the second half to score
three more tries to run away worthy winners to the delight of their
supporters.
Hashan Maduranga who had a grand game, scored five tries while
Chathura Gomes and Richard Dharmapala scored a try each. Chathura Gomes
converted three tries while Richard Dharmapala (two) and Ranga Madushan
(one) added the extra points to the other tries.
Kavindu Perera (three) and Kasun Bandara (one) scored the tries for
Vidyartha with Chamath Bandara converting all four tries.
Science College’s Richard Dharmapala was adjudged the Most
Outstanding Player of the tournament. Science College stormed into the
final with a sensational 15-10 win over defending champions Isipathana
while Vidyartha overcame St Joseph’s by 31-26 in the other semi-final.
Royal Plate champions
Royal College, Colombo clinched the Plate Championship by thrashing
Ananda College, Colombo by 40 points (five goals, one try) to 10 (two
tries) in the final after leading 26-5 at the breather.
Arshad Jamaldeen (two), Ijaz Bohoran (two), Damien Ratwatte (one) and
Shehan Pathirana (one) scored the tries for Royal with Damien Ratwatte
converting three tries and Arshad Jamaldeen added the extra points to
two tries.
Ashanka Hemaratne (one) and Woshan Randima (one) scored the tries for
Ananda.
Royal entered the Plate final by overcoming Piliyandala Central by
29-5 while Ananda beat Dharmaraja by 15-7.
Panadura Royal take Bowl
Royal College, Panadura bagged the Bowl Championship by defeating
Zahira College, Colombo by 17 points (one goal, two tries) to 5 (one
try) in the final.
Harsha Iroshan (one), Danuka Ratnayake (one) and Sahan Nadeesha (one)
scored the tries for Panadura Royal with Harsha Iroshan converting one,
while A S M Rifakath scored the solitary try for Zahirians.
Former Thomian and Sri Lanka fly half and Vice President of the SLRFU
Asanga Seneviratne was the chief guest and gave away the awards.
