Local Government elections:
UPFA secures comfortable win
The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA)
secured a comfortable victory in the second phase of the Local
Authorities election 2011 winning a total of 45 Local Councils out
of 65 bodies. The main opposition United National Party (UNP) and
the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) failed to win even a single
Local Council at the election held on Saturday.

PSC will work on political solution
President Mahinda Rajapaksa said a Parliamentary
Select Committee (PSC) will be entrusted with the task of working
out a political solution to the Tamil question and propose suitable
constitutional amendments to give effect to the process.

UPFA wins several UNP-held local councils
The UPFA wrested control of several local
councils previously held by the UNP during its comprehensive victory
at the concluded Local Government elections. The UNP which failed to
win a single council at the concluded second phase of LG polls,
ceded the Minuwangoda MC, Homagama PS, Akurana PS,
Lindula-Talawakelle PS and Elpitiya PS to the UPFA.
