EPDP candidate attacked
An EPDP candidate contesting the Valvettithurai Urban Council was
allegedly hacked with swords by two persons who came on a motorcycle on
July 16. He has been admitted to Valvettithurai government hospital. The
candidate is Vyramuttu Paramanandarajah (54) years.
Youth set himself ablaze after stabbing woman
An incident of stabbing and self immolation by pouring petrol all
over the body took place at Bastian junction Jaffna on July 15 at 3.30
p.m.
A youth from Hatton working in a hotel in Jaffna waylaid a woman and
stabbed her on the neck and abdomen and set fire to himself after
spraying petrol all over his body. When the fire was ablaze he torched
her in the blazing fire. The woman had died before admission to the
hospital. The youth is in a critical condition at the Jaffna hospital.
The deceased woman is Suthaharan Akila (28) of Mootha Nainar
kovillady at Kachcheri Nallur road. The assailant is Subramaniam
Sathiyan (28) of Hatton. The Jaffna police are investigating.
New factory to be opened in Atchuvely
‘A factory will be opened at Atchuvely to solve the unemployment
problem among the youth and to raise the standard of living of the
people in the North. The President has sanctioned the opening of five
industrial ventures by foreign investors in the North’, said the
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa at a meeting held at Kayts
Open stadium on July 16.
The minister visited Karainagar and Kayts and opened a road at
Karainagar and laid the foundations for new projects to be opened in
Kayts.
The minister further said that under the “Northern Spring programme
money has been allocated for the rehabilitation of 14 schools and 100
temples. He said, what could not be accomplished during the past 40
years has now been achieved within 48 hours by me”, he said amidst
cheering. The completion of Sangupiddy, Thondamanaru bridges are unique
achievements by our government, he said. It is by cooperating with our
government and voting for our candidates the North will emerge as El
Dorado he assured.
Korean clinic opening
The opening ceremony of the remodelled Korean clinic at the National
Ayurvedic Teaching Hospital, Colombo 8 will take place on July 18 at 10
am.
Indigenous Medicine Minister Salinda Dissanayake, Deputy Minister
Pandu Bandaranayake and Korean Ambassador Jongmoon Chul will be present
on the occasion. KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) is
supporting this project.
Prison inmates hold blood donation

The male and female inmates of the Batticaloa Prison participated in
a blood donation campaign organised by the Batticaloa Blood Bank on July
16.
The prison staff also participated in the blood donation held under
the guidance of Prison Superintendent Kithsiri Bandarage.
Fined Rs 200,500
Maravila Additional District Judge and Magistrate Chandana
Kalansooriya imposed fines totalling Rs 200,500 on 39 traders in the
Wennappuwa and Dankotuwa areas who were found guilty of selling and
displaying for sale food items which were not suitable for human
consumption. The raids had been conducted on July 7 and July 8.
Public Health Inspectors Sumith Vaas, Amila Gunawardena, Chandana
Haturusinghe, Buddhapriya Nissanka, Ajith Rohana, Pradeep Abeyratne,
Chaminda Jayasekera, W Jayakumara and Vajira Nilantha conducted the
raids.
Lecture on whales and dolphins
An illustrated lecture on whale and dolphin watching in Sri Lanka by
marine biologist Anouk Ilangakoon, will make a presentation on July 21
at 6 pm at the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS),
