PS chairman held in bribery case

Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Atukorala was arrested by Bribery Commission officials for allegedly soliciting a Rs 1.5 million bribe from the Bentara Paradeshiya Sabha chairman. It is reported that he had accepted the bribe to provide a permit to transport soil.

 

Anti-Dengue programmes in Kelaniya schools

Public Health Inspectors attached to the Kelaniya MOH Office have taken steps to launch anti-Dengue programmes in 20 schools under the purview of the Kelaniya MOH Office. The programme will be conducted on the instructions of Kelaniya MOH Dr Wasantha Rajapaksa.

 

Principal dies during training

[June 30 2013]

Raddolugama Pagnananda Madya Maha Vidyalaya Principal W.A.S. Wickramasinghe died following a stroke while exercising in the morning at the Rantambe Cadet Camp. Wickremesinghe, 52, was among the 97 participants in the month long military leadership training programme for school Principals.

 

Senior Minister leaves for Geneva

Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning Dr. Sarath Amunugama will leave for Geneva tomorrow to represent the Sri Lankan Government at the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic & Social Council of the United Nations

 

President unveils Buddha statue

President Mahinda Rajapaksa unveiled a six feet Samadhi Buddha statue erected at the entrance to the Mihintale sacred area concurrent to the 2320 Mihindu Jayanthi commemoration. The President performed the first flower and oil lamp offering to the statue constructed by the Civil Defence Force (CSD).

 

Train crashes into parked lorry, one dead

[June 24 2013]

One died and four passengers were seriously injured when a train bound for Galle crashed into a lorry at Angulana . According to Police sources, the train was packed with rush hour passengers knocked the train when it was parked close to the railway track.

 

Man nabbed with ganja in bag

[June 21 2013]

A 31-year-old male, resident in Paththinigama, Galnewa was arrested by Galnewa Police on afternoon while carrying 1.508 kgs of ganja hidden in a travelling bag after alighting from a Colombo-Anuradhapura bus at Paththinigama junction.

Sri Lankans in the UK, a broad, volunteer coalition of Sri Lankan associations and individuals in Britain, held a massive demonstration on July 17 against the Channel 4 TV which is going around the world with a “documentary” named “Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields”, in front of Channel 4 TV station in London. The protesters shouted slogans charging Channel 4 activities against Sri Lanka as unethical, malicious and biased. North-East gets one percent of GDP

The government has spent around one percent of the Gross Domestic Product for development programmes of the Northern and Eastern provinces under the directions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Living standards of people in these areas have been improving at a rapid pace, Prison Reform and Rehabilitation Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera said.

US Tamil questions ‘Channel 4’ credibility

A Sri Lankan Tamil who is currently a US citizen, expressed his shock and disgust on how the so called protectors of global human rights shamelessly tried to capitalize on the sufferings of Tamils in Sri Lanka to fulfill their self serving objectives. Joseph Navaratnam, a Tamil living in the USA, lashed out at Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch who screened the Channel 4 video at Capitol Hill, for selling the sufferings wholesale of the Tamils to “rekindle the bonfire that caused all these sufferings.”

Delft visited by a minister after 20 yrs

Delft Island, the lonely and largest island in mid sea, 46 km away from Jaffna mainland, was visited by a government minister for the first time in 21 years. Presidential Task Force on Northern Development chairman, Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa visited Delft Island on Saturday. The then minister of National Security Ranjan Wijeratne had visited the island in 1990, and since then no minister had visited there.

Tamils in North rallying round President

“I trust President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government and he will surely solve all the problems of the Tamil people soon,” Hartley College, Jaffna, Principal N. Devendrarajah said. He further appreciated the service rendered by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, the originator of the Uthuru Vasanthaya rapid development programme, who visits the region frequently and initiates important development programmes.
